OCCUPY DARKNESS - Ronald Malfi
Do you see yourself as part of a tradition?

Frankly, there should be no tradition in writing. There should only be evolution.

Seen in that context, what do you believe is the chief significance of your own work?

First and foremost, I write what I enjoy writing, which equates also to what I enjoy reading. If there is any significance in my work, it is my commitment to the story above all else. The characters who populate that story must behave like real people. I’ve never been much of a plot-driven author—I don’t outline my novels, and very often I’m not even sure exactly where they’re going once I start writing them. For me, this makes my work seem more organic, more real.

What do you envision as your role in the evolution of the genre?

I am one cog in the wheel, doing my job, telling my stories. I’ve attempted to hammer out a niche with stories that hopefully resonate with readers, and perhaps shine a different light on what people think horror fiction should be. I am always satisfied when, in reviewing one of my books, a reader says, “I didn’t think I liked horror until I read this book…” Horror is one of the most versatile, beautiful, and fulfilling genres there is; if someone hasn’t found a horror novel they like, they’re reading the wrong ones.
